Carlos M. de Castro III, MD, is currently a professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine in the Division of Hematologic Malignancies and Cellular Therapy, Department of Medicine. He is also a member of the Duke Cancer Institute. Dr de Castro received his undergraduate degree from Duke University in biomedical engineering. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he also completed his residency in internal medicine. He completed a fellowship in hematology-oncology at Duke University Medical Center. 

His clinical research currently focuses on treatments for bone marrow failure conditions such as paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, and acute leukemias.

Dr de Castro has served in several roles at Duke, including medical director of the 9100 Malignant Hematology Ward, medical director of the Apheresis Unit, medical director of the Outpatient Treatment Center, and program director of the Duke Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program. He is on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Panel for Myelodysplastic Disorders and serves as a member of the Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation Medical Board of Directors.
