Carla M. Nester, MD, MSA, FASN, is the Jean Robillard Professor of Pediatric Nephrology and the division director of Pediatric Nephrology, Dialysis, and Transplantation at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, IA. She is also the associate director of the Molecular Otolaryngology and Renal Research Laboratories (MORL) at the University of Iowa, the largest combined clinical and research laboratory in North America with a focus on complement biology.

Dr Nester is a National Institutes of Health–funded, tenured faculty member with a translational research program focusing on rare complement-mediated kidney diseases. In addition, she is the primary clinical investigator for the University of Iowa C3 Glomerulopathy Natural History Study, which includes one of the largest cohorts of patients with rare C3 glomerulopathy available to research. Finally, Dr Nester is a clinical trialist; her clinical practice has become a hub for bringing the new generation of anticomplement therapeutics to a rare disease population.
