Carl D. Regillo, MD, FACS, FASRS, is the director of the Retina Service at Wills Eye Hospital and a professor of ophthalmology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and performed both his ophthalmology residency and his vitreoretinal fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital. He is the founder and former director of the Wills Eye Clinical Retina Research Unit, former chairman of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Retina Basic and Clinical Science Course, former chairman of the Wills Eye Institutional Review Board, and prior director of the Wills Eye Retina Fellowship Program.

He has authored more than 200 publications, along with more than 20 book chapters and 9 major books. He has been a principal investigator for numerous major international clinical trials investigating new forms of treatment for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and a variety of other retinal conditions. He also lectures worldwide.  

Dr Regillo has served on the scientific editorial boards of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Review of Ophthalmology, Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, the Year Book of Ophthalmology, Retinal Physician, and Retina Today. He is a recipient of the Achievement, Senior Achievement, Secretariat, and Lifetime Achievement awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, as well as the Honor, Senior Honor, and Founders awards from the American Society of Retina Specialists.   

He was named as one of the “150 Top Innovators in Retina” by Ocular Surgery News, was selected as a charter inductee of the Retina Hall of Fame in 2017, and has been included on The Ophthalmologist "Power List" in 2018 and 2020 as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world of ophthalmology. Dr Regillo has been listed multiple times over the years as a retina “Top Doctor” in Philadelphia Magazine, Philadelphia Life, Main Line Today, and South Jersey Magazine. He was also listed as one of Newsweek's top 150 ophthalmologists in the United States in 2021.
