Peter Campochiaro, MD, is a clinician-scientist and the George S. and Dolores Eccles Professor of Ophthalmology and Neuroscience at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He received his MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, a vitreoretinal fellowship with Dr Ronald Michels at the Wilmer Eye Institute, and cell biology and neurochemisty research training at Johns Hopkins. 

Dr Campochiaro studies ocular neovascularization and excessive vascular leakage, which occurs in age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion. He utilized mouse models to help define the molecular pathogenesis of ocular neovascularization and excessive vascular leakage, including the roles of VEGF, HIF-1, and Tie2. His clinical trial group showed the benefits of inhibiting VEGF in diabetic macular edema and retinal vein occlusions. He has helped to develop strategies to provide sustained suppression of VEGF. His laboratory also demonstrated that oxidative damage contributes to cone cell death in retinitis pigmentosa, and this has also advanced to testing in clinical trials.

Peter K. Kaiser, MD, is the Chaney Family Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology Research and a professor of ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. He graduated magna cum laude with highest honors from Harvard College and magna cum laude from Harvard Medical School. He completed an internal medicine internship at Massachusetts General Hospital, an ophthalmology residency at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (currently known as Massachusetts Eye and Ear), and a vitreoretinal fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, where he was awarded a Heed Ophthalmic fellowship before joining the Vitreoretinal Department of the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH.

As a National Eye Institute– and National Institutes of Health R01–funded principal investigator, Dr Kaiser leads a team involved in the evaluation of vascular biology in age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. In addition, he is actively involved in clinical research, having served as study chairman for numerous major multicenter international clinical trials and as principal investigator for more than 60 trials evaluating new treatments for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal disorders. He is the director of the Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE). 

Complementing his research endeavors, Dr Kaiser serves on numerous scientific advisory boards and addresses his research interests as an invited speaker at national and international conferences. He is a major contributor to the medical literature, having authored 7 textbooks, 30 book chapters, and more than 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He is the editor in chief of Retinal Physician and an associate editor of International Ophthalmology Clinics, and he serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, RETINA, Retina Today, and Ocular Surgery News. 

Dr Kaiser has been honored to receive the Lew R. Wasserman Merit Award from the Research to Prevent Blindness and the Young Investigator Award from The Macula Society. He has also been recognized by the American Society of Retina Specialists Honor and Senior Honor awards, along with the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement, Senior Achievement, and Lifetime Achievement awards. He has been listed as one of the “Best Doctors in America” every year since 2002, was named as one of the “150 Top Innovators in Retina” by Ocular Surgery News, was selected as a charter inductee of the Retina Hall of Fame in 2017, and has appeared on the biannual “Power List” for The Ophthalmologist in 2016, 2018, and 2020 as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world of ophthalmology. He is the team ophthalmologist for the Cleveland Cavaliers (National Basketball Association).

SriniVas R. Sadda, MD, FARVO, is the director of artificial intelligence & imaging research at the Doheny Eye Institute and professor of ophthalmology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is the immediate past president of the Doheny Eye Institute. He received his MD from Johns Hopkins University, where he also completed an ophthalmology residency and neuro-ophthalmology and medical retina fellowships at the Wilmer Eye Institute.

Dr Sadda’s major research interests include retinal image analysis, advanced retinal imaging technologies, and clinical trial end point design. He has more than 680 peer-reviewed publications and 20 book chapters, and he has given more than 450 presentations worldwide. 

He is the editor in chief of the 7th edition of Ryan’s Retina. He also serves as an editor in chief of Graefe’s Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and is an editorial board member of Ophthalmology; Ophthalmology Retina; Ophthalmology Science; Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina; and RETINA. 

Among Dr Sadda’s awards and honors are a Physician-Scientist Award from Research to Prevent Blindness; a Senior Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists; an Achievement Award and a Secretariat Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology; a John H. Zumberge Research and Innovation Award; a Young Investigator Award, a W. Richard Green Lecture, and a Paul Henkind Memorial Lecture from the Macula Society; a Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists; an Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award; the Vitreo Retina Society of India Nataraja Pillai Oration; and the Euretina Lecture. He is also a Gold Fellow and Trustee (Retina) for The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and president-elect of the Macula Society. Dr Sadda’s research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for several years, including a current R01 grant from the National Eye Institute. He has been named to the "Best Doctors of America" list for several consecutive years.
