Julie R. Brahmer, MD, MSc, is codirector of the Thoracic Oncology Program and professor of oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University (SKCCC-JHU). In addition to serving as coleader of the Cancer Immunology Program, she also directs the SKCCC on the JHU Bayview campus. She is co–principal investigator of the JHU National Clinical Trials Network and helps direct all oncology cooperative group activities on the JHU campuses. Dr Brahmer is an international leader in lung cancer clinical trials research with expertise in drug development for thoracic malignancies and immunotherapy.

Dr Brahmer received her undergraduate degree in chemistry and philosophy in 1989 from Creighton University in Omaha, NE, and went on to receive her medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1993. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Utah and later became the chief medical resident before moving to Baltimore to complete her fellowship in medical oncology at SKCCC-JHU. 

Dr Brahmer's research interests include leading early phase immunotherapy trials of anti–PD-1 antibodies, international phase 3 studies of immunotherapies in lung cancer, and investigator-initiated trials evaluating epigenetic therapies in combination with immunotherapies. 

She is a member of the SKCCC-JHU immunotherapy-related toxicity management team and coleads National Comprehensive Cancer Network and Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer toxicity guideline development for these national and international organizations.

Bruce E. Johnson, MD, is an institute physician at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a coleader of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Lung Cancer Program in Boston, MA. He is also a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and an American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Translational Research Professor. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his medical degree from the University of Minnesota, and he trained in internal medicine at the University of Chicago. Dr Johnson completed his medical oncology training at the National Cancer Institute, where he served as a faculty member from 1985 to 1998 and as head of their Lung Cancer Biology Section for 6 years. He came to Dana-Farber in 1998 to head the Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology.

His research is devoted to testing novel therapeutic agents for their efficacy against lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. He has published more than 270 research articles on a variety of topics, including the molecular basis of lung cancers and the development of targeted therapies for patients with specific genomic alterations in lung cancer. He is one of the investigators who discovered epidermal growth factor receptor mutations, which have enhanced the treatment of lung cancer throughout the world. He also led the studies that led to the US Food and Drug Administration approval of dabrafenib plus trametinib for BRAF-mutant non–small cell lung cancer. 

Dr Johnson served on the ASCO Board of Directors from 2008 to 2011, received the ASCO Cancer Foundation Translational Research Professorship in 2008, and was selected as an ASCO fellow in 2012. He was elected president of ASCO for the 2017-2018 term and served as immediate past president in 2018-2019.   

Mark G. Kris, MD, is an attending physician in the Thoracic Oncology Service, Division of Solid Tumor Oncology, Department of Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), New York, NY. Dr Kris is the first incumbent of the William and Joy Ruane Chair in Thoracic Oncology. Additionally, he is a professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, also in New York, NY. 

Dr Kris graduated from Fordham University. After receiving his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, he served as chief medical resident and a fellow in medical oncology at MSKCC before joining the attending staff there in 1983.

He is a specialist in lung cancers. Dr Kris is particularly interested in developing ways to choose treatments for patients based on the molecular characteristics of their tumor specimens. His research also includes the evaluation of new anticancer agents (particularly those targeting lung cancers) and multimodality therapy (using surgery, radiation, and drugs together to improve outcomes for individuals with thoracic cancers). 

He is author or coauthor of more than 500 scientific publications. He serves as a member of the Antiemesis Panel for the National Comprehensive Cancer Center Network. Dr Kris also serves as co-chair of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) guideline panels for adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation for non–small cell lung cancers and antiemetics. 

Dr Kris is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, and ASCO. He received the first ASCO Humanitarian Award in 2011. He also received the Annie Blount Storrs Award from Calvary Hospital in 2014 and the Willet F. Whitmore Award for Clinical Excellence from MSKCC in 2021.
